Itinerary
Day 1 – Rapid City – Mount Rushmore
Arrival day in Rapid City, SD. Check into your Black Hills hotel for a four night stay. Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. Then you visit Mount Rushmore, where you will have a chance to walk up close to the monument, visit the artists studio, then enjoy the evening Lighting Ceremony. (D)
Day 2 – Rapid City – Black Hills Sightseeing
The morning begins with a visit to Riddle’s Black Hills Gold Factory. Watch up-close and learn the details of how gold jewelry is made. You’ll see what it takes to make Black Hills Gold jewelry, the history of the company, and You’ll see the ancient process of lost- wax casting and how diamonds are cast in molten gold!
Next, you will visit the Crazy Horse Memorial, the still unfinished mountain carving dedicated to Native Americans. You will also visit Hill City with thanks to the Crazy Horse Memorial it is a rejuventated arts community, featuring funky shops, galleries, and boutiques.
You will then attend the Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival. This one-of-a-kind event includes a buffalo wallow chili cook-off, a buffalo chip throwing contest, cowboy poets, musical entertainment, arts & crafts and much more.
Then take a jeep tour at Custer State Park. Drive past herds of free roaming buffalo, antelope, prairie dogs and more. The wildlife in this park is beautiful. After a day of sightseeing, return to the hotel for the evening. (B)
Day 3 – Rapid City – The Buffalo Round-up
This is the Big Day! Get up bright and early for the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. At this exciting annual event, feel the thunder as 1,500 head of buffalo rumble by and park personnel and cowboys do their best to drive the Park’s herd into Buffalo Corrals, passing two designated viewing area along the way.
After the herd is safely in the corrals, the park staff will sort, brand, test and select certain animals for the fall sale to be held in November.
This afternoon, you will drink in the beauty of the forested mountains on the scenic byway, Iron Mountain Road. With its pigtail bridges, mountain switchbacks and amazing tunnels which perfectly frame the faces of Mount Rushmore.
Next, you ride on the historic 1880 Steam Train. Hear the bellow of the engine and the whine of the whistle as it winds its way through the scenic hills between Hill City and Keystone and back again. (B)
Day 4 – Rapid City – Deadwood
Today you visit Kevin Costner’s Tatanka, “The Legend of the Buffalo.” This Bison Interpretive Center tells the story of the buffalo of the Plains States from the 1820’s to today.
Then explore the rich and roistering gold camp of Historic Deadwood, which provided the setting for the last great gold rush in America. Legalized gaming has returned to storied Deadwood Gulch where the like of Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, and Poker Alice once walked. You will have time to try your luck at the tables, as well as tour Historic Boot hill where the legends now rest. Dinner is included at a local restaurant tonight. (B,D)
Day 5: After breakfast, depart for home with fond memories of your Wild West Adventure. (B)
