Itinerary

Day 1 – Cody, WY

Arrive in Cody, WY where you enjoy a three-night stay.  Dinner is on your own this evening.

Day 2 – Buffalo Bill Center of the West – Free Time Downtown Cody – Old Trail Town – Dinner & Show at Cody Cattle Company – Cody Night Rodeo

Start the day at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West which includes five museums, all under one roof! It’s the largest, most acclaimed museum in the vicinity of Yellowstone.  There’s plenty to see at the Center of the West: Explore Plains Indian cultures, trailblazing cowboys and cowgirls, classic and modern western artworks, and more — all of the galleries share the uniquely thrilling stories of the West.  The museums are the Buffalo Bill Museum, Plains Indian Museum, Cody Firearms Museum, Draper Natural History Museum, and the Whitney Western Art Museum.

After a morning exploring the museums, enjoy some free time and lunch on own in Downtown Cody.

This afternoon, step back in time with a visit to the Historic Old Trail Town and Museum of the Old West. A collection of 26 authentic buildings and artifacts from the mid to late 1800’s that have been relocated to where the original town site of Cody was.

Located here also are thousands of historic artifacts from the Old West and grave sites of several notable Western figures. Among them is the grave of mountain man John Johnston, who was portrayed by the actor Robert Redford in the 1972 motion picture “Jeremiah Johnson.”

Here too are original cabins used by Old West outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and a Wyoming saloon frequented by Cassidy’s “Hole-in-the-Wall Gang”. Also, on this site is the log cabin home of “Curley” a Crow Indian army scout who helped guide Lt Col. George A. Custer and the U.S. 7th Cavalry to the battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. Old Trail Town exists today as a memorial to the uniquely American experience known throughout the world as “the Old West.”

Tonight, enjoy dinner and a show at the Cody Cattle Company.  Let the Triple C Cowboy Band entertain you with western style singin’ and dancin’! And enjoy the scrumptious chuck wagon dinner of beef brisket, chicken and all the fixin’s!

Next, head to nearby Stampede Park for the Cody Night Rodeo.  For 90 plus years, starting officially in 1919, the Cody Stampede Rodeo has been held every summer. Cody has not only one of the longest running successful professional rodeos, but also the only place in the country that has a rodeo performance nightly.  Every rodeo performance is approximately 2 hours long with all rodeo events from bronco riding to bull riding and team roping to barrel racing for adults and kids. (B,D)

Day 3 – Full Day Tour of Yellowstone National Park w/lunch

Enjoy a full day tour of Yellowstone National Park with a local guide. America’s first National Park, spans an area of 3,468 square miles, comprising lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. It is home to a large variety of wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, bison, and elk. Preserved within Yellowstone National Park are Old Faithful and a collection of the world’s most extraordinary geysers and hot springs, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. You will see Norris Geyser Basin, filled with steam vents and geysers and explore Mammoth Hot Springs, featuring an amazing staircase of hot spring pools, known as “terraces”. Heat, water, and limestone have combined to form these unique geologic formations. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is roughly 20 miles long, measured from the Upper Falls to the Tower Fall area. A boxed lunch will be included today with your visit to Yellowstone. Return to Cody for the night.  Dinner included at a local restaurant this evening. (B,L,D)

Day 4 – Deadwood, SD

Travel today to Deadwood, SD and check into your hotel for a three-night stay.  Dinner tonight is included at a local restaurant.  After dinner, enjoy a stroll down Main Street, have a drink in the saloon where Wild Bill took a bullet, watch a gunfight in the street or enjoy an evening in one of the casinos.  Deadwood is one of the most fun, pedestrian towns in the West and we put you in the center of the action. (B,D)

Day 5 – Full Day of Black Hills Touring – Custer Jeep Tour – Crazy Horse Memorial

Meet the guide for a full day of Black Hills touring.  Arrive at Mt. Rushmore in time for lunch on own. You will have plenty of time to walk around, photograph and explore the monument.

Then, take a jeep tour at Custer State Park. Drive past herds of free roaming buffalo, antelope, prairie dogs and more. The wildlife in this park is beautiful.

Next, visit the Crazy Horse Memorial, the still unfinished mountain carving dedicated to Native Americans. You will also visit Hill City with thanks to the Crazy Horse Memorial it is a rejuvenated arts community, featuring funky shops, galleries, and boutiques.  Dinner is included here in the Laughing Water Restaurant.  (B,D)

Day 6 – Second Day of Black Hills Touring – Tatanka – Days of 76 Museum – Black Hills Gold – Wild Bill

Enjoy a second full day of Black Hills Sightseeing with a local guide. Start with a visit to Tatanka, the incredible life size sculpture of a buffalo jump and learn the ‘Story of the Buffalo.’  Then tour the Days of 76 Museum one of the most complete collection of historic wagons, antiques and native artifacts in the Black Hills.

The afternoon features a tour the Black Hills Gold Factory.  Watch up-close and learn the details of how gold jewelry is made. You’ll see what it takes to make Black Hills Gold jewelry, the history of the company, and You’ll see the ancient process of lost- wax casting and how diamonds are cast in molten gold!

There will also be free time in Deadwood for Ramblin’ & Gamblin’ and to enjoy the Mount Moriah Boot Hill Cemetery, where Hickok, Calamity Jane and many of the famous former residents are buried.

Tonight, dinner is included at a local restaurant.  After dinner, you’re in for a Wild Bill Evening.  See the shooting in Old #10 Saloon, then watch as Jack McCall is run down in the street and put on trial for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok.  It’s possible members of your group could be on the jury. (B,D)

Day 7 – Wall Drug Store – Badlands National Park – Oglala Lakota Living History Village – Mitchell, SD

Depart Deadwood this morning and stop at Wall Drug Store, America’s most famous roadside stop.

Then you will visit Badlands National Park. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Ancient mammals such as the rhino, horse, and saber-toothed cat once roamed here. The park’s 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today.

Next, visit the Oglala Lakota Living History Village, a new attraction near Badlands.  This village opened in 2021 and depicts Oglala Lakota life from the late 1800s through the 1960s.  Local Oglala interpretive guides share historical facts and modern-day cultural knowledge as they take groups through the various types of housing structures utilized by the Lakota people. You’ll see firsthand how the dwellings were maintained and the conditions in which the people lived.  There are also shopping opportunities on-site with local artists selling original native art.

End the day in Mitchell, SD for the night. Dinner is on your own this evening. (B)

Day 8 – Corn Palace – Depart for Home

After breakfast, visit the original Corn Palace. Called “The Corn Belt Exposition,” it was established in 1892. Early settlers displayed the fruits of their harvest on the building exterior in order to prove the fertility of South Dakota soil. Then depart for home. (B)
