Itinerary
Day 1 – Abingdon, VA – Show at Barter Theatre
Arrive in Abingdon, VA for a two night stay. Tonight, dinner is included at the Peppermill Restaurant, a 1900’s era home two blocks from the Barter Theater. This local eatery & lounge offers New American chow in quaint digs with dark woods & a nostalgic old-time atmosphere.
After dinner your group will enjoy a show at the Barter Theatre, one of the longest-running professional theatres in the nation.
They opened their doors in 1933, proclaiming “With vegetables you cannot sell, you can buy a good laugh.” The price of admission was 40 cents or an equivalent amount of produce. Four out of five theatregoers paid their way with vegetables, dairy products and livestock.
Consult with one of our Sales Staff or look at www.BarterTheater.com for a complete list of next seasons shows that include: Driving Miss Daisy, 9 to 5 The Musical, Wizard of Oz, Frankenstein, and A Christmas Carol. (D)
Day 2 – The Birthplace of Country Music Museum – Bristol Speedway – Squaring Dancing & Appalachian Cookin’
This morning you head to Bristol, VA to visit the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, in affiliation with the Smithsonian Institute, tells the story of our music heritage. From the Bristol Sessions and beyond, our region continues to influence music around the world. The museum embodies this accomplishment and promotes Bristol as the Birthplace of Country Music. See why Bristol is home to the “Big Bang of Country Music” and browse the award-wining interactive exhibits.
Next, you will have some free time in downtown Bristol for lunch on own. A certified Main Street USA community, Historic Downtown has a thriving Arts and Entertainment District. It is full of specialty shops, dining, galleries and more for you to explore. The state line between Virginia and Tennessee runs right down the main street of this Historic Downtown.
Then your afternoon highlight is the Bristol Motor Speedway where you do a lap on the high-banked track known as “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile!” You’ll also see Pit Road and the Bristol Dragway known as “Thunder Valley.”
Returning to Abingdon, your evening is at Heartwood, the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center. This visit begins with Square Dancing Lessons, a fun filled cultural sharing experience for all ages. You will learn traditional square dance calls and both beginners and experienced dancers are encouraged to “Grab Your Partner and Do-Si-Do.” If you choose to simply watch and listen you’ll enjoy an afternoon of toe-tapping tunes and mesmerizing waltzes, with the visual of a few confused, beginning dancers stumbling around the dance floor.
Once your group has worked up an appetite, you attend Heartwood’s “Appalachian Cooking Class.” You will learn that Appalachian Cooking focuses on fresh seasonal ingredients from local mountain farms, which a local culinary pro will transform into a delicious Southern creation. The best part is that in addition to learning how to prepare this evening’s vittles you get to eat them.
End the evening with an Appalachian Storyteller. Storytelling in Appalachia is as old as the hills themselves. Sit a spell and enjoy as a storyteller shares the culture and humor of the mountains. This experience is sure to delight. (B,D)
