Day 2 – FDR’s Little White House – Americus, GA – Lunch at The Bulloch House Restaurant – Plains, GA – Jimmy Carter National Historical Park – Carter Boyhood Farm – The Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail
This morning, visit Warm Springs, GA to tour FDR’s Little White. Franklin Delano Roosevelt built the Little White House in 1932 while governor of New York, prior to being inaugurated as president in 1933. He first came to Warm Springs in 1924 hoping to find a cure for the infantile paralysis (polio) that had struck him in 1921. Swimming in the 88-degree, buoyant spring waters brought him no miracle cure, but it did bring improvement. Visitors can tour FDR’s home, which has been carefully preserved very much as he left it, the servants and guest quarters, and the nearby pools complex that first brought the future president to Warm Springs.
Then enjoy lunch at the Bulloch House Restaurant. You will dine where Southern Hospitality is at its best because it’s known for being a way of life at the Bulloch House Restaurant. Nestled in the charming downtown area you will dine on delicious southern food of meats, fresh vegetables and mouthwatering desserts with an authentic “Old South” flare.
The afternoon will be spent in Plains, GA, the hometown of Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States. The rural southern culture of Plains, Georgia, that revolves around farming, church and school, had a large influence in molding the character and in shaping the political policies of the 39th President of the United States.
Few U.S. presidents have had such close ties with where they were born and raised. The park preserves the key sites and structures associated with Jimmy Carter during his life span. It provides for the interpretation of the presidency of Jimmy Carter and presents the history of a small rural Southern town.
There are several key sites of interest within the park, including the Official State School of Georgia (Plains High School), where Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter attended and graduated. It also includes the Train Depot that served as Jimmy Carter’s Presidential Campaign Headquarters and the Boyhood Farm where Jimmy Carter was raised.
The Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm was owned by Earl Carter, Jimmy’s father, from 1928 until 1949. Jimmy Carter lived here from the age of 4 until he departed for college in 1941. It has been restored to its appearance before electricity was installed in 1938, and is part of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. As you stroll along the walking path, be sure to stop and read the wayside exhibits at various locations. Also, push the buttons on the audio stations to listen to Jimmy Carter share stories about his childhood. Visitors to the site will be able to walk around Jimmy Carter’s childhood home, Earl Carter’s commissary, a tenant house occupied by the Clark’s, and various other buildings.
Today will also include stops on the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail. This program was inspired by Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter to help increase habitat for Monarch Butterflies. The program is based in Plains, Georgia, and has expanded throughout the United States as well as internationally. You can visit gardens that are part of the trail and admire the beautiful butterflies.
Before departing Plains, GA, a photo stop will be made to see the Jimmy Carter Peanut of Plains Statue. Return to Callaway Gardens for the evening. Dinner is included at the resort. (B,D)
Day 3 – Depart for Home OR Optional 3rd Day at Biblical History Center
This morning depart for home. (B)
Groups can add an optional third day to this itinerary with a day at the nearby Biblical History Center.
This morning, visit the nearby Biblical History Center and explore 2000 years of history. Meet your guide for a tour of the archaeological replica garden where full-scale reconstructions of structures relevant to daily life in Biblical times bring history to life. Four areas of ancient life are represented in the Archaeological Replica Garden: Life of the Shepherd, Life of the Farmer, Life of the Village, and Roman Theater and Market Street. This tour will leave you with a new understanding of life in Old and New Testament times.
Following the tour, lunch is a Biblical Meal, a four-course meal consisting of 15 different food items, including soup, salad, fruit, main course, dessert and all beverages (grape juice or water). Your guide will explain ancient meal practices including Passover and the Last Supper, and the setting of the table for reconciliation. All of this will be done in the 1st century-style dining rooms, at triclinium-esque tables.
The Biblical History Center is a great place to visit any time of the year, but November 1- December 23, you can witness the history of the first Christmas during the Manger Tours. See full-scale reconstructions of structures of the time, genuine artifacts from the era, and insights that will make Christmas even more meaningful.
Return to Callaway Gardens this afternoon for free time. Explore all that Callaway Gardens has to offer. Dinner is included at the Resort this evening. (B,L,D)
