Itinerary
Day 1 – Essex Steam Train – Becky Thatcher Riverboat Cruise – Mystic, CT
Arrive in Essex, CT for a ride the Essex Steam Train. This 2½-hour journey begins at the historic 1892 Essex Station for a 12-mile, narrated roundtrip into the heart of the unspoiled Connecticut River Valley.
Once at Deep River Landing, you are escorted onto the Becky Thatcher Riverboat for a 1¼- hour cruise along the Connecticut River. The visual serenity of the river valley is on full display from Becky’s multiple decks. The deep water, coves, inlets, marshes, wildlife, and rocky shoreline are simply breathtaking!
Then this afternoon you travel to Mystic, CT for the evening. Dinner is included tonight at a local restaurant. (D)
Day 2 -Mystic Seaport – Newport, RI – Rosecliff & Breakers Mansions
This morning visit Mystic Seaport – the Museum of America and The Sea. This is the nation’s leading maritime museum. You can explore American maritime history as you climb aboard historic tall ships, stroll through a re-created 19th-century coastal village and watch a working preservation shipyard in action. You will have free time for lunch on your own.
You then head to Newport, RI and visit two of the area’s magnificent mansions. First you visit the Rosecliff, completed in 1902, at a reported cost of $2.5 million, Mrs. Oelrichs hosted fabulous entertainment here, including a fairy tale dinner and a party featuring famed magician Harry Houdini.
Next, tour the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages”, The Breakers. This mansion is a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America. The 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin inspired this 70 room Italian Renaissance style palazzo. The Breakers mansion was given its name for the waves that continually crash into the cliffs below.
Continue to Warwick, Rhode Island, just a short distance from Newport, for the night. Dinner is included this evening at a shore side restaurant. (B,D)
Day 3 – City Tour of Providence – Conway Scenic Railroad
This morning after breakfast meet your local guide for a tour of the city of Providence, Rhode Island’s Capital City. Learn the fantastic story of Providence, you will admire the beauty and panoramic views of colonial College Hill, and see the renaissance of vibrant Downtown. Following the tour, you will have free time in Federal Hill area of Providence for lunch on your own.
You then depart for North Conway, NH for a late afternoon ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad. Enjoy an old-fashioned railroading experience as you journey on historic rail routes in vintage passenger cars from the 1874 train station in North Conway Village, NH.
Spend the night in a North Conway, NH hotel. Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. (B,D)
Day 4 – Mount Washington Cog Railway – Winnipeasukee Train – Hyannis, MA
This morning you depart for Bretton Woods, NH to ride the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Experience a sense of adventure and history on the Cog Railway’s 3-hour round-trip to the top of Mount Washington. This scenic train ride allows visitors to take in the spectacular panoramic view, spanning the White Mountains of New Hampshire and all of the Northeastern United States.
You then continue on to ride the Winnipesaukee train. This scenic ride provides memorable views of colorful trees reflecting in the state’s largest lake on a one-hour excursion.
Late this afternoon you head to Cape Cod and Hyannis, MA for a two night stay. Dinner is on own this evening. (B)
Day 5 – Full Day on Nantucket Island – Lobster Dinner
Today, enjoy a full day on Nantucket Island. Board the high-speed ferry to the stunning island of Nantucket where on arrival, you meet a local guide for an island tour. At the completion of the tour, your guide will point out the restaurants, galleries and shops that are within walking distance of the dock. Lunch and shopping are on your own.
At your leisure, admission is included to the Nantucket Whale Museum. The museum houses a large collection of whaling artifacts and memorabilia, including longboat, harpoons, and scrimshaw, but the centerpiece is the complete skeleton of a 46-foot bull whale suspended from the ceiling.
A Lobster Dinner is included this evening back on the mainland. Alternate entrees will be available for any “landlubbers” not wishing to eat shellfish. (B,D)
Day 6 – Depart for Home
After breakfast, depart for home. (B)
