Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrive at the Greenbrier Resort – Dinner in the Main Dining Room
Today, you arrive in White Sulphur Springs, WV and the luxurious Greenbrier Resort for a three night stay. Located amid the breathtaking Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, The Greenbrier is a National Historic Landmark and an award-winning resort welcoming guests since 1778.
The Greenbrier Club, a Monte Carlo Style Casino will be open on arrival and each person in your group will receive $20 in free slots play. The Casino is also equipped with a variety of table games. Non-gamblers and Gamblers alike may want to enjoy first run movies in the Hotel’s Theatre tonight. Check the schedule on arrival.
Tonight, dinner is included in the Main Dining Room at the Greenbrier Resort. The iconic Main Dining Room is the epitome of Greenbrier cuisine in an elegant setting; a timeless classic featuring southern and French-inspired dishes. Dress Code applies while eating in the Main Dining Room (D)
Day 2 – Cass Scenic Railroad – Green Bank Radio Astronomy Observatory – Lewisburg Shopping – Breakfast is included daily in the Main Dining Room. Then you begin a day of great adventure as you motor north into the Alleghenies, your destination is the townsite of Cass. It looks much today as it did in its heyday as a company logging town. Restored company houses line the hillside. The Historical Museum and the Cass Showcase with its diorama and film provide interpretation.
You’ll pick up a box lunch at the Company Store, and then it’s an exciting moment as you board a steam locomotive and pull out of the depot. This was a logging route with grades as steep as 11%, you’ll climb through deep forest with a beauty as old as the hills, and then suddenly you will break out above the timber and enjoy a view of West Virginia that is beyond words. At Whitaker Station you stop for your picnic and have a chance to learn turn-of-the-century timber techniques.
Leaving Cass you cross into the next valley and find it filled with giant satellite dishes. This is the Green Bank Radio Astronomy Observatory intentionally located in one of America’s most quiet spots. Here our scientists are listening for sounds from space, and you will tour the facility.
Heading to Lewisburg, WV this evening, you enjoy dinner at Food & Friends Restaurant followed by time to visit the shops and galleries on Main Street. Return to the Greenbrier for the evening. (B,L,D)
Day 3 – Leisure Time at the Greenbrier – – Today, you enjoy a full day of leisure time at the Greenbrier. Explore the many unique experiences the Greenbrier has to offer.
Those who wish can take a Hotel History Tour. The Greenbrier’s elegant architecture and renowned interior design are the subjects of this historic guided tour. This activity focuses mainly on the lobby areas, highlighting the notable works and antiques that grace the resort’s interior.
You may also take advantage of the Greenbrier Spa (additional costs) and visit the boutiques and shops. Or you could tour the famous Cold War Bunker if you wish (additional cost). This fascinating facility was built as a top-secret Cold War Fallout Shelter for Congress. Constructed during the Eisenhower Administration, supposedly as the sub floors of a Medical Clinic, it was kept in constant readiness with regular replacement of food, necessities, and technology updates for over 30 years. The Bunker was able to receive members of the House & Senate at a moment’s notice. Yet resort employees passing with a few feet of its entrance were completely unaware it existed. Come see a very unique American Secret, now open to inquiring minds.
Head to The Greenbrier Gourmet (located in the Lower Lobby Shop Corridor), sip a refreshing cup of coffee and watch one of our culinary demonstrations of The Greenbrier’s signature dishes. See the step-by-step preparation techniques of savory dishes that you can make at home. You can also take advantage of the Olympic sized Indoor Pool or Nightly movies in the Theatre.
Your stay at the Greenbrier includes access to the President’s Cottage Museum. The Greenbrier has been host to 26 U.S. presidents. The memorable moments from their stays are on display at The Presidents’ Cottage Museum, housed in a historic two-story building overlooking the Springhouse. These archives contain documents dating back to The Greenbrier’s early history.
A true Greenbrier tradition, afternoon tea has been offered daily in the upper lobby since the 1930’s. From 4:15 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., guests are invited to relax and enjoy a complimentary assortment of teas and cookies. Live piano music and/or dancers will provide entertainment as you savor your tea and delicacies.
Tonight, dinner is on your own. You may again dine in the Main Dining Room, but there are many other options available such as Prime 44 West, a steakhouse honoring WV Native and NBA Legend Jerry West, 42 Below in the Casino, casual dining at Drapers, or The Forum featuring classic Italian dishes, (B)
Day 4 – Depart for Home – After breakfast in the Main Dining Room, depart for home. (B)
